September News

Dear Parents,
We have had a great first month of school. We are well into our routine by now. Reading groups have been set and your students are working on the strategy of questioning as they read their instructional novels, as well as their independent books. They should be reading EVERY night.
In writing we have been working on our second genre of study: personal recount. We have covered the following targets: multiple paragraphs, creating a mood, figurative language, multiple noun modifiers, strong verbs, compound sentences, complex sentences, and tense and perspective maintained. If they are not keeping up in class or have been absent they need to be taking their spirals home to work on.
During our math time, we are still working with collecting and interpreting data and the different types of graphs that can be used. We have worked with line plots, stem and leaf, circle and step graphs. We are using this data to find the mean, median, mode, etc to help us understand our information and make decisions about what our data means!

Also, we have started our Math Mates and you should be receiving a parent letter explaining the work in this week’s Friday folder. Basically, they will receive a Math Mate worksheet on Thursday and it will be due the following Thursday. The worksheet has been developed to help students with mastery of basic sixth grade math skills and each week’s work, and it will be related to the previous week to help assess areas of strength and weakness. These will be sent home after they have been corrected.

In science we just completed a cool experiment of discovering the rate of photosynthesis with the use of carbon dioxide and water, and how light affects this rate! We are using this knowledge to relate how living things need food and how they break this food down for energy! In the next couple of weeks, we will be moving onto surfaces of the earth, and preparing for outdoor lab.

Social studies has been busy as well. We have memorized and performed the Preamble (link to the Leawood podcast page coming very soon), and listened to and explained the reasons for the Declaration of Independence. Here is a link to the website called independenceroadtrip.org.

We have also discussed and argued the plight of being a loyalist or a patriot during the American Revolution.
Thank you to all who chaperoned our field trip last week. We had a wonderful time and the kids were so well behaved. We couldn’t have done it without you.
Sincerely,
Mr. Lupo and Mrs. Story
